PROVEN LEADERSHIP

As a County Commissioner since November, 2010, Leslie has demonstrated her ability to lead on key issues and get things done for the people of Lake County.

*  The unemployment rate was 12.6% when Leslie took office in 2010, but by December, 2013, the rate had been lowered to 6.3%; Leslie led the charge during this time to implement a very specific and goal oriented economic plan for Lake County to address past deficiencies in the County's economic policies

*  When a sex offender village was proposed in East Lake County, Leslie immediately called a town meeting to address residents' concerns and she secured changes to the County's ordinances to protect neighborhoods and residents throughout the County from the type of village being proposed

* Leslie advocated for the opening of public lands to County residents that were previously acquired through a referendum and bond issue, and with the support of the County Commission the majority of land acquired has now been opened for use by residents, and those lands that are not accessible or that have limitations making them unlikely to be used for public use are being evaluated to determine whether their maintenance and/or ownership should be under entities other than the County Commission in order to reduce ongoing maintenance costs for Lake County taxpayers

*  When water levels became dangerously low in the Harris Chain of Lakes and the Dora Canal, Leslie urged the Water Management District to take measures to protect Lake County's lakes, and in order to assure passage through the Dora Canal despite the low water levels, Leslie spearheaded an effort to remove of tree stumps and roots in the Dora Canal by obtaining the support of the Lake County Water Authority and the Cities of Eustis, Mount Dora and Tavares, thereby assuring safe passage through the canal.

* Leslie organized a neighborhood clean up in the Sorrento Area that resulted in tons of debris and trash being collected with the help and support of local residents and the East Lake Chamber of Commerce (with special thanks to Scott Taylor for assistance in getting information about the event to residents within the area)

* Leslie spearheaded a summit regarding Lake Apopka with Orange County, the Water Management District, State leaders, Residents and Stakeholders in an effort to gain support for enhanced efforts to significantly improve the Lake's water quality, improve fishing and recreational opportunities on the Lake, protect the valuable natural resources and birding opportunities on the Northshore of Lake Apopka, and promote the entire area as a eco-tourist destination now and in the future through a trail system that loops around the lake, boat ramps and trails that make the area accessible to residents and tourists.

* Leslie championed the initiation of an Advanced Manufacturing Center at Lake Tech in order to provide much needed curriculum in the areas of advanced welding, machining, technology and manufacturing skills in order to meet the needs of local businesses. The availability of advanced manufacturing classes is an important recruitment tool when seeking to attract new companies to Lake County. Thanks to the support of Senator Alan Hays and Representative Larry Metz, and the vision and leadership of Lake Tech Executive Director Diane Culpepper, Lake Tech recently initiated the Advanced Manufacturing Center at Lake Tech in order to provide advanced manufacturing curriculum for Lake County students.
